What Customers Say About Magellan RoadMate 1212 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator:

I actually purchased my 1212 broken off ebay. That's probably my biggest gripe about this device, besides the software. The touch screen is very accurate.

Beginning with the original software, I must say I was very disgusted in the quality. It's ashame the software is on such a lower level than the hardware. And to follow up with some other reviews, this device is VERY picky about chargers. After some tweaking, I managed to make the darn thing boot again and got some software reloaded on it.

Build quality is exceptional with nice plastic and very ridged seams. I find the menu's to be extremely clunky, the voice prompts annoying, and the map data not so up to date. This aside, I REALLY like the quality of this device. The screen is exceptionally bright and crisp.

None of my USB chargers will charge this device, and few will power it. However, that much can be fixed (ahem.not to be mentioned here.).

I used it to find several golf courses and restaurants with navigation right to the steps of my destination. This is a great product. I bought approx 1 month ago and have already taken on a vacation. Software seems to be up to date and accurate, as I've not had one instance of missing roadways or destinations in the software. A great buy for the money.

Here are some of the Pros to the unit: 1. The unit changes brightness/colors automatically for you from day to night driving. WE HAD TO PAY TO SHIP IT BACK AND MAGELLAN REFUSED TO REIMBURSE US THE COST OF SHIPPING. I give another BIG THUMBS DOWN to the Magellan customer service. 5. This becomes more frustrating when you have set route exclusions or anything like that because you have to do this all over again.

It's a great size and can easily be thrown into your purse or pocket if you want to remove it from the car.4. 2. The predictive text is very accurate.6. 2. IF YOU GET OFF YOUR ROUTE FOR ANY REASON YOU MUST RECALCULATE THE TRIP.

Voice prompts are pretty clear (for an automated voice anyway).3. At first, the unit worked perfectly. We tried resetting it and that was useless so we had to call customer service.3. I gave the unit 3 stars for several reasons. Or you can just risk that you're not really supposed to get off on that exit and continue driving and hope for the best. The maps are clear and easy to see. I just received a replacement unit in the mail as mine was non-repairable, so we'll see how this one functions. 1.

I bought the 1212 about 2 months ago. The second way it failed us was that the touch screen completely quit working. We couldn't enter any POI's or addresses and really couldn't get it to do anything. The guy we spoke with was attempting to give us the address of where to send the unit in for service and put us on hold about 20 times during this address-giving session for some unknown reason. When you stop for gas or get off on an exit for any reason it will ALWAYS tell you to get off at the next exit once you've gotten back on the expressway. Like I said, when the unit worked it was great. The interface is very easy to navigate and understand. It got us where we needed to go and quickly recalculated if we got off track.

For the price of the unit, what you actually get is an awesome deal.On the downside, on our first cross-country trip the unit failed us miserably in two ways. At one point, although counter-intuitive, we followed it's instructions and took us in a 30 minute long big circle to get back to the expressway. We actually reported them to the BBB due to the response we received upon requesting to be reimbursed for shipping. But due to the failure of the unit on a major trip, and Magellan making us pay to ship the faulty unit back to them, there is no way I can give this unit more than a 3-star rating.

It's a small, simple gps with built-in maps, voice directions, and speech-to-text for street names. It worked right out of the box. Minor complaints: 1) UI sometimes confusing - e.g. when you get a street name match, it is not clear that there is a list of alternatives; 2) it shows mileage to next turn, and time to destination, but not any variations of this - we want also mileage to destination; 3) volume has to be all the way up to be heard over road noise; 4) battery life is too short to be useful for anything - maybe unit is faulty.

Hasn't been that big of a deal, I've never lost the signal once I get it, but it's just when starting it there's a little delay. It may not have the millions of POI as the other ones, but we don't mind.

I love having the street names said outloud while you're driving, we'd previously borrowed a friends without this option and it was annoying trying to look at it and drive. This is our first GPS, when shopping I just wanted something cheap and with text-to-speech, this worked out nicely.

Just relax and drive. With this, you just set it and forget it.

It tells you where to go, when to turn, all that good stuff. The one problem I've noticed is that when I start it, it sometimes takes a few minutes to get a signal.

Otherwise, it works perfectly for us.
